Catherine's Traditional Yuletide Musical Celebration Spotlights Community Volunteers

Her Royal Highness has organised her yearly Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The 1,600 guests will listen to a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

A Theme of Kindness and Compassion

The central message of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to young musicians aided by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to increase availability of music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the trust, with awards contributing to instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be performing at tonight's service.

"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now studying at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Within the audience will be people from various age groups.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "a dream come true."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by television on December 24th.
